Description:
Cult hit by the Austrian composer Josef Zawinul. The title of the song pays homage to the New York jazz club Birdland on Manhattan 52nd Street and the nickname of jazz saxophonist Charlie Parker ('Bird'). Zawinul had frequented the club as a young musician and met his future wife here.
The piece was published in three versions by Weather Report, Manhattan Transfer (Extensions, 1980) and Quincy Jones (Back on the Block, 1989 ) each awarded a Grammy. In particular, the Manhattan Transfer version is well known for its Vocalese style (text by Jon Hendricks). The fusion jazz piece achieved unusual commercial success; it also became a big band standard. Ulrich Sthamer arranged it for a saxophone quartet.
