Description:
Contrapunctus XI is an orchestration by Bernd Franke of the huge triple fugue from J.S. Bach's The Art of Fugue. It was commissioned by the Leipzig Gewandhaus and premiered on 8 June 2019 at the Bachfest Leipzig by the Kammerphilharmonie Bremen directed by Omer Meir Wellber. Franke was inspired by the universality of the response to Bach's music (the central composer of Franke's famously musical hometown Leipzig) as he encountered it on numerous travels in India. This response was characterized as something euphoric, a balance of head, mind and body to do with the singing instrumentation, the energy, the breath (Pran), the spiritual in Bach's music.
