The libretto (by Irene Dische and Hans Magnus Enzenberger) is strongly influenced by Mozart's Die Entfuhrung aus dem Serail and it alludes to the original Bretzner/Stephanie text as wellas the book King of The Kings by Ryszard Kapuscinski which tells of the downfall of Haile Selassie's court in Ethiopia.
