This arrangement by W. Gillies Whittaker with bowing revised by Mary G. Whittaker, is based on the original 1697 edition of Sonata VI of the posthumous 'Ten Sonatas of Four Parts' and a manuscript score in the Euing Library, Glasgow.
All cello double notes may be played either divisi or non-divisi at the discretion of the conductor (but make sure you tell the cello section!). Ideally the contrabasses should lower the bottom string to D and play the small notes, otherwise these should be omitted.
Violins and Violas are non-divisi throughout unless indicated to the contrary. The Violin 3 part is a separate part and not an alternative to viola.
Originally published in 1930 by Oxford University Press, this new edition has been re-typeset but is otherwise unchanged.
