Qi Gong - a sort of 'self-healing breathing exercises' - is a method in traditional Chinese medicine. It combines breathing with gently flowing movements, stretching and concentration on various meridians (energy channels) to form a holistic health system the fundamentals of which are easy to learn. For musicians, four aspects of this holistic method are of crucial importance:* combination of breathing with musical creation,* stress management and stress prevention,* muscular tensions,* playing technique and* reduction of physical stress caused by the playing postureThe practical exercise concept presented here leads to a unity of the performer with the music and himself, to 'Wu Wei', the 'doing by not doing'. The theoretical basics from traditional Chinese medicine and Western kinesiology are presented in an easily understandable way. The exercise sequences are explained by means of clear depictions.Frank Hartmann is concert guitarist and guitar teacher with many years of experience as a teacher. He is Qi Gong trainer and lecturer and holds numerous courses and workshops. Author of various articles on this topic published in specialist magazines.
