Evert Taube (1890-1976) was an author, artist, composer and singer and is widely regarded as one of Sweden's most respected musicians and the foremost troubadour of the ballad tradition in the 20th century. He grew up on a desolate lighthouse station off the coast of Gothenburg, where aspirations of becoming an artist took him to Stockholm. A lack of money and support from home forced him to go to sea, and by the age of 18 he had already sailed around the world. He got his breakthrough with Calle Schewens Waltz, which he wrote in July 1031, as he was about to join the humorous 'Order of the Pillar'. He is said to have been kept prisoner and not released until he had written a song about the archipelago of Stockholm and the summer air of Roslagen and the gradually increasing darkness of July-nights.
