The Quintet for Oboe and Strings was written in 1932. Soon afterwards, it won a prize in the Daily Telegraph's Chamber Music competition, and was recorded for HMV records. The full score is presented here; asetof parts is also available.
The British composer Elizabeth Maconchy (1907-1994) was a highly versatile and popular composer. She studied at the Royal College of Music with Ralph Vaughan Williams, butcontinentalEuropean modernism proved to be a greater influence on her music; she admired both Bartok and Janacek. After the Second World War, she was much in demand, writing for many professional soloists and ensembles, amateursandstudents.
