Henri Vieuxtemps wrote in 1880 'In any case, I' ve already written my funeral march, it exists!' Whether this refers to the sketches preserved in the Royal Library of Belgium entitled Marche funèbre. Adieux adressés à un grand homme can' t be known for certain. Vieuxtemps' Funeral March for string quartet, however, is undoubtedly an enrichment of the quartet repertoire and can now be offered as a serious point of repose in concerts and competitions, and likewise at funeral services. The parts contain both the Urtext version and a thoroughly elucidated version as a suggestion for performance.
