The Shakers originated in the English Quaker Church and came to America in 1774 and settled in New England and in New York state. They still exist in some communities inthese territories.
The Shaker songs took on a lively spontaneity and a cross between Quaker orderliness and wild abandonment that characterised the rituals of the French prophets, from whom the Shakersdistantlystemmed.
The Shakers exercised in dancing, shaking and whirling until they went into trances and 'recieved songs as gifts. '
