Ernst Toch

Geographical Fugue

Experience a true milestone of choral literature: Ernst Toch's legendary "Geographical Fugue", composed in 1930, pioneered the fascinating genre of "spoken music" (Gesprochene Musik). What the composer once regarded as a lighthearted diversion has become his most celebrated and frequently performed masterpiece worldwide.

This rhythmic tour de force for mixed choir (SATB) a cappella captivates singers and audiences alike. Without singing a single pitched note, solely through the crisp, virtuoso declamation of exotic geographical names, a thrilling four-part polyphonic tapestry unfolds—bursting with wit, rhythmic precision, and dynamic energy.

This choral score from Alfred Publishing provides ensembles with the ideal edition to expand their repertoire with an extraordinary modern classic and guaranteed crowd-pleaser. An essential showstopper for any ambitious concert program!
