Description:
Commissioned by the family of the late Dr. Ed Ceilley for the University of Northern Iowa Jazz Band One, 'Medicine Man' is cast in an even 8th, 'ECM-ish' groove ala Jack DeJohnette. Featured soloists are alto sax (quasi-Kenny Garrett) and piano. A short middle section features some very playable woodwind doubles (altos on flute, tenors on clarinet and bari on bass clarinet). There are no real technical challenges, just a musical one: vibraphone and guitar are essential colors. Instrumentation: 5 saxes (w/dbls), 4 trumpets, 4 trombones, and 5 rhythm (v-p-g-b-d). Lead trumpet extends to Eb asbove the staff. Medium Difficult.
