Commissioned by Eric Schmitz, for the University of Rochester (NY) Jazz Ensemble, Arenas is an exciting, hard-driving, Afro-Cuban chart cast in a modal harmonic framework. In addition to an unaccompanied (free) piano solo, 'blowing' space is allocated to tenor and alto saxophones. Lead trpt. extends to a written E above staff. Recorded by the University of Northern Iowa Jazz Band One on Sea Breeze Vista on 'Memento'.
