Description:
Gary Schocker presents Yi Jing for Harp and Chamber Orchestra, here in a reduction for Harp and Piano. The three movements within are based on three particular hexagrams within the I Ching, the ancient Book of Changes and divination text used across the past three millenia. Schocker aligns these hexagram with various Chinese musical ideas (melodic or harmonic) and pairs them with Mozartian musical gestures, ideas, and progressions in a subversion of Schocker's more modernly tonal language. Particularly notable are the music-box sounds derived from Mozart's Flute and Harp Concerto, here recurring throughout the three movements in numerous musical transformations.
