This piece was concieved at La Citadelle la Ferriere in Haiti, a huge, half-ruined fortress high on a remote mountaintop and reachable only on horseback. It was a combination of the strange yet beautiful location and the music of a group of native children he encountered there that inspired Ramey to write 'La Citadelle'. Definitely a work for the advanced player.
