Description:
Francois Devienne (1759-1803), celebrated French flautist and composer, wrote many important works for the flute and a few operas, was also an oboist and played the bassoon in Paris Theatre de Monsieur 1788, and at the Grand Opera in 1796. He was also professor of the flute at the Paris Conservatoire. He had a general knowledge of all instruments and created a new kind of literature for wind instruments and, thus encouraging players to improve their technique, raised the standard of the French orchestra.
