This Sonata was composed for Frederick Thurston (1901-1954) late in the life of the distinguished clarinettist. In collaboration with Eric Harrison he gave the first performance during a BBC Third Programme broadcast on 27th January 1948.Boosey & Hawkekes published the Sonata in 1954, with the solo part for clarinet in Bb. The present reprinted edition (1983) restores the solo part for clarinet in A. This has been edited by Thea Kind, whose valuable assistance in its preparation for publication is gratefully acknowledged by the Publishers.
