Description:
In the same way that Louis Armstrong influenced jazz, Scott Joplin was famous for his ragtimes. He was the first well-known African-American composer between classical and popular music, brought together white and black societies with his music and is still considered the 'King of Ragtime'. Joplin always insisted that his pieces should not be rushed; hence he often wrote the tempo marking 'not fast'. Some of Claude Debussy's compositions were inspired by circus artists in Paris, which at the time supposedly also played Scott Joplin's ragtime music they brought from America. Among them is 'Le petit nègre', which he composed for piano. This piece is actually a cakewalk, a popular dance based on ragtime.
