This work was inspired by the painting 'Swing Landscape' by Stuart Davis. Davis had tried to convert the rhythms of jazz into a mural of vibrant colour. Schuller turned this process on its head when he wrote his 1966 composition 'American Triptych. ' Inspired by the Davis painting, he came up with this jazzy sounding tone poem.
