Description:
This overture is typical of the French style, and the concert element is also not completely missing in it. The fact that such a merry movement as Les Plaisirs is in a minor key proves that Georg Philipp Telemann (1681-1767), like Handel, did not always use the major and minor key in the sense of happiness and sadness for characterization. The lively Angloise must surely be interpreted flirtingly, but even more so La Badinerie Italienne must show utmost gracefulness. The Louire with its echo in a lower octave is a contemplative piece, and also the two Menuets are of a similar nature, even if less heavy. The Courante with its eight measures may hurry along even more. The final "Prestidigitator" constitutes a vivid character movement. -Friedrich Noack. Instrumentation: String Orchestra (2-2-1-1-1 in set): Hpchd.
