Description:
This work was written out of sympathy for the violinist, who, like all performers, spends many hours practising on his or her own. It is, then, a duet in which violinist takes comfort in whistling or humming while playing in a somewhat improvisatory manner. The work is characterized by oscillating major seconds and harmonics, both of which are heard in the opening bars. The first performance of Alone was a memorable one. It was given by Ronald Woodcock at the opening of the LDS Auditorium, Nuku’alofa, Tonga, on August 27, 1976. To the violinist’s surprise, hundreds of Tongan children, having heard a rehearsal, joined in with the whistling.
