The overture to The Mikado or The Town of Titipu (1885) catered for the contemporary taste for the exoticism of the orient, whilst remaining perceptibly a satire on the British traditions. It is the only Gilbert and Sullivan piece that has regained international fame. The score has an easy appeal and lyricism and irony are abundantly represented. (Concert Band)
