Red Prelude was composed to be performed on a beginner band's first concert. The composer's overarching goal was 1) to create a piece that is accessible for students that have been playing for less than a year, but that still sounds sophisticated and mature and 2) to introduce students to minor mode in a context that is slightly more restrained and reflective than many pieces written for their age group.
