Description:
The Introduction is in an A-B-A form where the first fanfare-like majestic theme passes from group to group of the instrumentation. This is followed by a dialog duet between alto saxophone and euphonium which provides a contrast before the music returns to the opening theme again before continuing attacca to the allegro. The allegro is almost entirely in 7 / 8 rhythm with odd bars here and there in other time signatures. This main section of the piece contains two distinct and contrasting themes the first very energetic and rhythmic and the second more legato but in the same tempo and time signature. After some development of this material the music builds up to a climax where both themes are played together in counterpoint.
