'Commissioned by the University of Texas at Austin in honour of its centennial in 1983, Centennial Symphonywaswritten for the University of Texas 'Longhorns Bands, ' Glen Richter, Director, for performance in the spring of 1983. I composed and scored it during the latter part of 1982 and completed the work inJanuary1983.
The intent is a festive display piece, a 'Band Gala. ' Throughout the work there are references to the regional background' Mexican, French, cowboy etc.. There are also variants on 'The Eyes of Texas' and'TheYellow Rose of Texas. ' Although scored for a standard concert band, Fiesta uses offstage Trumpets as antiphonal choirs. ' - Morton Gould
