Within the history of art song, the 600+ lieder of Franz Schubert stand supreme - though they were often intended purely for performance in his intimate circle of friends. Schubert arranged Der Tod und das Madchen for stringquartet (an indication that he was pleased with the song) in 1824. Mr. De Meij has adapted the second movement for concert band, where the majestic Death has an even more impressive appearance in the dark glowing sound of winds.
