Sousa was a prominent composer of operettas or musical comedy, his most successful being El Capitan (1895). It has been noted that if he had not established his popular and world famous professional band it is possible that he would have matched the stage success of contemporaries such as Victor Herbert and George M. Cohan. Circus Galop opens the first act of an un-produced operetta, The Irish Dragoon (1915).
