Joaquim Homs is recognised as the leading pioneer of twelve-tone composition in Spain, but the products of his long life and career were always grounded in romantic expressiveness. Homs was born in Barcelona and studied cello until 1922. Afterwards, he self-educated himself in composition and eventually studied with Roberto Gerhard from 1930 to 1936. After 1954, his connection with twelve-tone composition intensified and he moved away from traditional tonalities.
