Although this is not a piece of program music, the emotional basis for the piece comes from a mythological beast known as the Chupacabra, a fierce creature known for sucking the blood of goats and other farm animals. This creature lives in the forests of Puerto Rico, feeding upon the livestock of local farmers. The themes and pitch material of this piece comes from accounts of this impish little creature and the sound of a frog called a coqui that is indigenous to Puerto Rico.
