Figuren am Horizont are meant to be the composer's musical obituaries on dead fellow musicians. However, they are not mentioned by name because to him, it is about types of obituaries: In each of the five movements, the change from one state to another is made in a different way. The transition from life to death is either accepted or regarded as inacceptable. Sometimes mathematically abstract principles, sometimes historical stylistic quotations serve as metaphors and compositional basis at the same time. In the concluding Skizze für ein Haus im Licht (Sketch for a House in the Light), elements that have already been heard appear and are subject to a clarification process until the shadow of a Viennese song remains (Kalitzke).
