Description:
Steve Jones has set the original text by William B. Tappan to a haunting melody for use during Lent and Holy Week. Beginning with a three-part (S. A. T. or S. A. B) optionally a cappella first verse, the loneliness of our Lord's last hours is vividly displayed. Verses 2 and 3 make dramatic use of all four parts building to a more joyful verse 4 which tells us that Jesus is not suffering alone. Angels are singing strains unheard by mortals 'that sweetly soothe the Savior's woe. ' The memorable tune will facilitate learning while close attention to the dynamic markings will result in a heart-rending contribution to Lent and Holy Week worship. For choirs able to do so, the entire piece may be sung unaccompanied.
