Description:
The texts for both pieces are taken from hymns by St. Thomas Aquinas and are traditionally meant for the Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament in the Christian service. The rhythm is straight-forward but the expanded harmonic language and the multiple nondiatonic key changes used in both pieces require a moderately experienced choir. Piano reductions meant for rehearsal only, are provided for both works.
Tantum Ergo was commissioned for the 1999 May Festival at St. Stephen's (Bournemouth, England). O Salutaris was written for Ian Harrison, the organist and choir master of St. Stephen's, on the occasion of his 50th birthday.
