Description:
Giuseppe Ottavio Pitoni (1657-1743) was an Italian organist and composer, and one of the leading figures in the late Baroque era. He wrote an extensive oeuvre of liturgical music, with over 200 motets, 300 masses, and 800 Psalm settings. He bridged the gap between the counterpoint-driven styles of Palestrina and Scarlatti, and the more homophonic and harmony-driven works of Handel and Vivaldi, becoming a master of both styles in his ownright. His setting of the Laudate Dominum (Psalm 150) is for unaccompanied SATB chorus. Having been edited by the noted musicologist J. Steele, it is a suitable motet for any church service, or would make a perfect recital item.
