This fun, highly syncopated, moderately difficult expansion of the well-known traditional song from Mexico (which was popularized in America in the 1950s through the rock-n-roll version by Ritchie Valens, and immortalized in LA BAMBA, the 1980s biographical film about Valens) was inspired by the live mariachi band version the composer heard while sitting at an outdoor café in Mexico. Harris found it 'something strange, yet familiar”-a phrase that might be applied to this Fantasy as it floats through a variety of keys, tempos and moods.
