Die Lieder vertonen vier Gedichte Theoder Fontanes: Trost, Das Fischermächen, Mittag und Im Garten. Sie haben einen vollständig unterschiedlichen Charakter und sind nicht als Zyklus gedacht. Dennoch erscheint auch eine zyklische Aufführung reizvoll. Die Musik bettet die Texte in eine Tonsprache ein, die mit ihnen korrespondiert und sie nicht zudeckt. Melodie und Klavierbegleitung sind gleichberechtigt.
The four songs ground on the following poems: Trost (Consolation), Das Fischermächen (The Fishermaid), Mittag (Noon) and Im Garten (In the garden). The songs are entirely different in character and are not intended as a cycle. In spite or indeed perhaps because of this, a 'back to back' recital - a comparison, so to speak - appears all the more appealing. The music integrates the texts into a musical idiom which complements rather than drowns out its inspiration. Melody and piano accompaniment are equally relevant.
