Description:
Even with a seriously evil title, this has some beautiful moments. If you include timpani in your ensemble, this can be an outstanding feature (2 timps possible, better with 3), but it's all cued in other parts. A syncopated rhythmic pattern characterizes much of the beginning with some delicious dissonances. The ad lib solos are for 1st and 2nd trombones, trading eights, ending a dual cadenza. Following is a second thematic second leading to the opening feel (with a little variation) and the main motif, transformed. A big finish climaxes. Piano is important in this piece. WW 1-soprano saxophone, alternate alto part provided. Optional parts for French horns (alternate parts for Tpt 5-6 provided), tuba, and percussion (mallets and hand-percussion).
