This march was first named Prince Carl March, after a swedish prince. When Norway gained its independence in 1905 it was renamed after the young Crown Prince Olav, who later became King Olav V.
The danish Prince Carl was elected King of Norway when Norway became inependent in 1905. He took the name King Haakon VII, and Oscar Borg was asked to compose this march in his honour
